"Confused by lighting specs? We break down every key parameter you need to know, from basic photometry to advanced color quality and optical design."

1. Photometric Parameters (Brightness)

The basics: How bright is it, and where is the light going?

  • Luminous Flux (Lumens, lm): The total light output. "How bright the bulb is." Higher = brighter.
  • Luminous Intensity (Candela, cd): Light in a specific direction. "How focused the beam is." Crucial for spotlights.
  • Illuminance (Lux, lx): Light falling on a surface. Offices need 300-500 lx on the desk. Formula: 1 lx = 1 lm / 1 m².
  • Luminance (Nits): How bright the light source looks to the eye. The only metric matching visual perception.

2. Color Parameters (Quality)

Determining the "texture" of light and how objects look under it.

  • CCT (Correlated Color Temperature): The color of the light.
    • Warm White (2700K-3000K): Cozy, like candlelight.
    • Neutral White (4000K): Clean, crisp. Good for offices.
    • Cool White (6000K+): Energizing, bluish daylight.
  • CRI (Ra): Color Rendering Index. Sunlight is 100.
    • Ra > 80: Standard indoor lighting.
    • Ra > 90: High-end retail/museums. Essential for vibrant colors.
    • R9 Value: The score for saturated red. Vital for skin tones and wood. Always check R9.
  • SDCM (Color Tolerance): Consistency between bulbs. < 3 SDCM means no visible difference between fixtures.

3. Performance & Electronics

  • Luminous Efficacy (lm/W): Efficiency. Modern LEDs are 100-150 lm/W.
  • Power Factor (PF): Energy utilization. Commercial standard PF > 0.9.
  • Flicker: Rapid flashing causing eye strain. IEEE 1789 is the safety standard.
  • IP Rating: Protection. IP44 for bathrooms, IP65+ for outdoors.

4. Optical Design & Application

  • Beam Angle: Spread of light. <20° for accent, >60° for general lighting.
  • UGR (Unified Glare Rating): Visual comfort. UGR < 19 is the office standard for "no glare".
  • Cut-off Angle: Hiding the light source from direct view to prevent glare.

5. Tailored Applications

For Off-road 4x4: Focus on Lumens (raw power) and Lux @ Distance (range). IP67/68 is mandatory. Use 3000K yellow light for rain/fog penetration.

For High-End Retail: CRI and R9 are king. Make products pop. Use narrow beam angles to create contrast. Warm light (3000K) for gold/bakery, Cool light (5000K+) for diamonds.
